Why I Became A Financial Advisor

Why I Became A Financial Advisor

Finance is in my blood—so much so that it wasn’t really a question of whether or not I’d spend my life helping others with their finances. I grew up watching my grandfather, who had a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, live in the financial world. And then there’s my older brother, who was a successful vice president with EF Hutton. With these two strong examples, I got bit by the finance bug and decided to be part of an industry where I could make a difference in people’s lives.

How It Started

But first, let’s backtrack a bit. I graduated from Boston University and started working as a commercial lines underwriter. But after the 1970s bear market reached its end, I made a switch and started working at the firm of Moseley Hallgarten Estabrook & Weeden. Then in 1985, I was appointed as head of the trust services department of Shearson Lehman Brothers. With all this experience under my belt, I quickly learned that my favorite parts of the job had to do with financial planning and building long-term relationships with clients so I could help them pursue their goals. I decided to look for work where I could focus on these things.

What I Do Today

Now I am senior vice president at T.A. Holland & Co., where I have been at the helm of their financial services division since 1990. I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) practitioner and hold the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) designation from The American College of Financial Services.

I spend my days doing what I love—providing individuals, families, and business owners with comprehensive financial solutions for the accumulation, protection, and distribution of wealth. I am committed to equipping my clients with a personalized plan, educating them, and motivating them to persevere in the economic cycle (during good times and bad) and stick to their strategies.

For me, it’s all about making an impact and adding value to my clients’ lives. There’s nothing more fulfilling than hearing from a client that our advice and support has helped them avoid a mistake or achieve a goal. I also can’t deny that it’s been a joy to serve my clients alongside my daughter, Lindsay, and my son, Thomas, who are also part of T.A. Holland’s financial services team (I told you this was in our blood)!
